Making a Barn Quilt

One of my great friends who blogs over at Home on the Range Exchange was hosting a Barn Quilt class. I thought it sounded like a fun idea to get out of the house and be creative. Plus I haven't had a lot of time to quilt lately so I was happy to have a quicker finishing project.  This is my completed square. I love the way it turned out and it sets on my front porch now.

The history of barn quilts is actually really interesting and someday I would like to go see the Flint Hills Barn Quilt trail.

Interchangable Welcome Sign

As you know, I like to handmake most of the gifts that I give. I got the idea for my sister's birthday gift from Lolly Jane's Interchangeable Bunting Board. I wanted to make mine a little different- wrap the hangers around from the back instead of using the mini-clips like they did. I like the way mine turned out.

Materials:
12" X 12" board- luckily I had some leftover from this project (Hmmm, maybe I should make one of those for our house!)
Paint
Printer
Pencil
Nails
Scrapbook Paper, Felt Cut-Outs
Ribbon

I sanded down the board, painted it cream and then watered down some brown paint to give it a light brown wash.

For the lettering I don't have a fancy Silhoute or Cricut or anything so I used old fashioned tracing.
I printed "Welcome" out in a size and font I liked and traced it onto the board.
I painted it with two coats of brown paint.

For the bunting I nailed 4 nails in the back of the board and measured out ribbon to fit onto the nails.

The Christmas bunting is made out of Ric-Rac and felt cut-outs I bought from Hobby Lobby.
The Halloween bunting is made from Ribbon and Scrapbook Paper embellished with Glittery Bat stickers.

I have made a few more buntings to send to my sister, but I will let her see them before I post them on here.

I love this project because it can be displayed all year round either on a frame stand or with a sawtooth hanger!

I hope you enjoy it Camille!!

Thrifty Projects in the Works

Finally got started on a few projects for the house last night- mainly did a lot of sanding. Here are some of the finds I am refinishing to make our house purdy!

This rocker I found on Craigslist for $20- Super sturdy and comfortable, all sanded up and ready for paint!

Found this shelf at a garage sale for $3- nothing too special but it should work well in my craft room.

Old windows for free from my sister. I have a couple projects I am sooo excited about planned for these.

This little guy was my best friend last night!!

Stay tuned to see how they all turn out! And make sure you come by later this week for my first tutorial!!!

Jewelry Organizers From Old Frames

I love taking things I already have around the house that are sitting in drawers and turning them into something that can be useful and pretty.

I started with some inspiration via Fawn's Blog- Always Chasing Life.

Then I took a couple old frames I had been saving up for some project- I think I bought these to use for signs at our wedding- hadn't found a perfect use for it yet. I love the rustic barnwood feel. I grabbed some craft paint I had on hand and started mixing. First try was a no-go- I thought a pretty lavendar would work and look great by my dresser. Nope- it turned out almost pink when spread over the wood. Then I mixed up a lovely green with some brown and watered it down.

Then took a paint pen and made some flourishes on the corners. The picture shows the green a little brighter than it is- it is actually a foresty green. Then I screwed the hooks in- a little off center to give it a bit more interest. I can't wait for my husband to get these hung up and start hanging my necklaces and bracelets on them!
