Rapunzel Costume

This month I decided to challenge myself and make my niece a Halloween Costume. She loves the movie Tangled and so I decided to make her a Rapunzel Dress.  I used Simplicity 2065- made in size 3- It is a slight bit too long for her and a little bit too big in the bodice. I read several reviews saying the bodice is sized too small and it is way too long but I didn't experience that.

It will be nice for it to fit her in January- I think she is planning on having a Tangled birthday party- so she can wear the dress then too!

This is my first time sewing something so detailed. The pattern was great- not too complicated, and I love the way the dress turned out!

My mother and I made the braid (Instructions for the braid came with the pattern). My mother also made the felt flowers just using felt, hot glue, and beads.

Seeing Marley play in this dress was just too fun!

Eli wanted to dress up too, so we made him a makeshift Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle costume.  His real one should be better!

Tuesday 10- 10 Pins from Last Week!

I redid the design on the blog- what do you think?? I may want to change some things around but I am pretty happy with it!

I finished the Rapunzel Dress I made for my niece on Saturday. She got to try it on Sunday and it fit great! Now we just need to do a photo shoot and I can share it!!

This week I decided to do a random Tuesday 10- Just listing 10 recent pins from Pinterest! Here we go!

1) I would love this as a coffee table and it doesn't look like it would be that hard to DIY- so pretty! Source

2) I really wish I could make furniture. Ana White has some AWESOME patterns. When I was little I used to build chairs and houses for my cats out of 2X4s, so I probably still have some of those skills:)

3) Deer Graphic- my husband is a big hunter and I thought I could do something cool with this graphic from the Graphic Fairy. She has a lot of cool vintage graphics- kind of want to pin some more!

New Food Friday #12- Bacon Wrapped Jalapeno Poppers

Last weekend we had a football watch party to go to- Go Cats!!

So I decide to try some bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers- they are my husband's favorite and I thought I would surprise him and make some.  He said that I didn't do them right, but I thought they were delicious!

And the Wildcats won!!! 6-0 baby!!

Bacon Wrapped Jalapeno Poppers:

Here is how to make them:

Ingredients:
1 package bacon
30 jalapenos- mine were medium size from my brother's garden
1 package cream cheese
1 cup grated cheddar cheese
6 green onions, chopped
1 tsp garlic powder

Wash jalapenos, trim off stems, cut in half and take seeds out. You probably want to wear gloves while doing this part!

Mix together cream cheese, cheese, green onions and garlic powder. Fill jalapeno with cream cheese mix.

Cut bacon strips in half and wrap around jalapeno- use a toothpick to secure in place.

Place wrapped jalapenos on broiler sheet. Bake at 450 degrees for 12-15 minutes, until bacon is cooked.

My husband says that they taste better when they are cooked on the grill, so that is an option too. But in a pinch oven cooking works too :)

Caramel Apple Treat- Improv Cooking Challenge

I am sooo excited to be taking part in The Improv Cooking Challenge at Lady Behind the Curtain.

This month's challenge was Caramel and Apples. We could make up a recipe, or try a new recipe using caramel and apples in the ingredients.

For mine I decided to make a quick, easy treat that I would eat for breakfast or an evening snack. I have fixed this twice and I love it!!

Individual Caramel Apple Treat:
Only four ingredients:
1 Apple- I used Fuji
1/2 cup yogurt
1 Tbsp Caramel sauce
Cinnamon

Cut the apple into bite size pieces and place in bowl. Sprinkle with ground cinnamon.  Place in microwave for 3 minutes, or until apples are tender.

Take apples out of microwave and top with yogurt, cinnamon and caramel sauce.  If you don't like plain yogurt you can use vanilla, I am sure it would be good too. I love this snack because it tastes like a treat but it has a good amount of protein in it from the yogurt.

New Food Friday #11- Chicken Bacon Ranch Salad

I love Chicken Bacon Ranch Wraps but I recently have been trying to cut back on grains so I decided to make a low carb version of a Chicken Bacon Ranch Wrap- so basically make it into a salad!

It was so good and had a lot of really healthy ingredients too!

Here is the basic recipe-
2 cups baby spinach
3 oz. grilled chicken, cut into strips
2 slices cooked bacon, torn into pieces
1/2 avacado, sliced
1/2 tomato, diced
5 olives
2 slices red onion
Ranch dressing.

Place all toppings in a bowl, drizzle with ranch!

This is a little high in fat because of the bacon, avacado, olives and ranch but if you watch your portions on the bacon and ranch the rest of it is healthy fat. This was a salad I really enjoyed and it was super easy to make.

Oilcloth Lunch Tote

This project has been planned for a long time and I just finished it two weeks ago! For the longest time I was using a lunch box that I had bought in 2006 to take my lunch to work. Nothing special and it worked just fine, but then it broke.

I had seen a few of these cool Oilcloth lunch bags on Pinterest and I decided I wanted to make one for myself. So I didn't buy a new lunch box, just carried my lunch in plastic baggies for the past 3-4 months!! This is a big improvement :)

So I am carrying my lunch in style! I got the basic shape from this Skip to My Lou tutorial, but I added a liner and straps and made it a lot bigger so I can carry my rectangle pyrex.
I also sewed it together differently so that I could make the sides a different color from the front and back.

For the most part I didn't have difficulty sewing the oilcloth- I set my stitch length to 5.0 and sailed through. But then came time to sew the liner in and it bunched a bit- you can see it at the top. Not a craft fail, but definitely not as good as I want it to be. If I do this again I will try and use some of the tricks ModernJune has on her website.

If there is enough interest I can post a tutorial for the lunch tote to show the alterations I made to the original tutorial.
